About The Plant Rescuer
"Plants shouldn’t end up in the bin just because they no longer look ‘perfect’. They deserve our love and care, for without them none of us would exist. All too often houseplants are treated as disposable items, like a wilted bunch of flowers but they are alive and do so much for us, the least we can do is try our best to help them recover" - Sarah @theplantrescuer

Introducing the Plant Rescue Box in collaboration with author & writer Sarah Gerrard-Jones. Sarah AKA @theplantrescuer is a plant lover and goes above and beyond to save the botanical beauties that she comes across in her daily life.

By buying our rescue boxes, you can help us make a dent in the tonnes of waste that's generated by the plant industry every year. As online sales of plants grow, so do the mountains of plants that get discarded. Retailers are reluctant to sell a plant if it has even the slightest imperfection for fear the buyer will complain or demand a refund. The more complaints a retailer gets, the more inclined they are to throw away healthy plants just because they don’t look 'perfect'. Most of us now agree that throwing away vegetables because they’re wonky shouldn’t be an acceptable practice, and yet there are houseplants being discarded on a massive scale for the same reason. This needs to stop.

Since we launched our boxes, they have been very popular and a massive success! We have been speaking to some of our suppliers and are now accepting our supplier's rejected plants and using these in our plant rescue boxes as well as any in our shop that arent in tip-top condition.

How many plants are in each box?
In our rescue plant boxes the number of plants will vary week to week. We usually include 3 plants per box but there is sometimes more or less depending on value.

To get an idea of what plants we class as Weird and Wonderful, please check out this page.

Plants will be picked at random and will only contain plants that we would be happy to rescue ourselves.

Should I buy a box?
Plants will need some TLC so ideally, you will have a basic understanding of what they will need to thrive. If you're looking to learn more about nurturing and rescuing plants then these boxes are a good place to start.

Can I get a refund?
All the plants sold will be imperfect but with the right care will grow - so sorry, no refunds will be given. The price reflects the condition of the plants. Sometimes plants might arrive with pests - we do our best to check, treat and inspect everything on arrival and departure from Sprouts but sometimes things are missed.

Sometimes there might be a small delay on getting your order out if we don't have any rescue plants currently available but we will get your order out as soon as we can

Important Information

If you have any questions, please check out the below or get in touch via our contact form

We're devoted to sending our customers quality plants with the best service around. Every plant is backed by our 7-day guarantee, so they arrive in good health.

Our team takes extra steps when prepping plants for transportation, but they're still sensitive to changes, so there may be minor cosmetic issues. We always aim to photograph and disclose any flaws before shipping, but a living creature travelling across the country in a box can take a hot minute to adjust to its new life.

If you have any issues within 7 days of receiving your order, holler at our customer support team on our contact form with your order details and some pics of the issue. After the guarantee has expired, though, we can't refund as we can't guarantee care and environmental factors. If you repot the plant during the 7 days, the guarantee is void.

We have been sending plants up and down the country for many year now and we like to think we have our way down to an art.

We protect the plant from falling out of the soil with tissue paper and tape if needed, then we wrap the plant in corrugated cardboard, and sometimes we protect the leaves with extra tissue paper if required. This is then placed into a box and if there is any empty space, we fill this with void fill to stop the plants moving around inside the box. Sometimes we will write a note on your packing slip to water the plant on arrival, so please look out for this. This is due a freshly watered plant going in a box will not only be soggy, but as the plant is in darkness this can sometimes make the plant unhappy when just freshly watered.

If your plant arrives to you unhappy, please send us a photo of the plant and packaging if relevant straight away, so we can advise you.

Online orders are packed and dispatched within a few days. Usually depending on volumes, we aim to get your order dispatched within 1 working day. We have collections from Royal Mail 6 days a week so deliveries tend to be speedy.

Our standard parcel delivery service is £4.99 for Royal Mail Tracked48, you can upgrade to Tracked24 for £2.50.

We do offer a Tracked48 Large Letter option for £2.99, and Tracked24 for £1 extra, but this only applies to products less than 2.5cm thick.

*Deliveries 7 days a week only included Tracked24 parcels.

We get a lot of boxes, packaging and whatnot at Sprouts from all our various supplier's deliveries. We re-use this packaging material where possible, plus we take in donations from local businesses and customers to our shop to avoid excess packaging going to landfill. Sometimes your delivery might look a little different, or come in a branded box from another company, but rest assured the items inside are carefully packed with love and attention inside. We use paper tape and all our branded materials included are fully recyclable. Sometimes we use polystyrene, bubble wrap or plastic wrap in the packaging, all these items are not new and where possible, please use them again.

a little disappointed

One of the pots, labelled as mini echeveria with mother plant lost, contained nothing but some soil and some very brown rotted roots- so absolutely no hope for that one. The baby Philodendron Ring of Fire roots were very rotten- I tried really hard, but it has not survived. Happy with the other plants, which were just a little tatty, but feel those 2 were way too far gone.

Hey, sorry to hear you was dissapointed with your order. I have just checked back through at the photo of the plants we included in your order. The two little plants in little pots - Philodendron 'Ring of Fire' and mini Echeveria, where I believe, thrown in as 'extras' and this should have been explained on the handwritten note which included our recommended advice for each plant - apologies if this wasnt clearly noted. I can see the Echeveria in my photo, whilst is small, is green and alive, it's possible it didnt travel in transit well. The other plants in your box had cosmetic damage or where a little bit tatty like you explained above and these plants alone where over double the RRP of the box size you purchased. I hope the plants are doing well in their new home, thank for rescuing them and supporting the scheme! Cheers, Jessy

They made it

I received 5 plants with handwritten information about why they were struggling. I managed to keep them all and they are now thriving. So glad I could save them. I liked the personal touch of Sprouts of Bristol.

Not what I was expecting.

I was really excited to receive this box based on other reviews.
I received three plants, one very small but not wonky which was lovely, one which definitely needs tlc but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for and sadly the third was way past needing tlc and was never going to survive. I love the idea of these boxes but not sure I’d buy another one at this stage I’m really sad to say.

Fantastic bundle

I ordered the rescue bundle (I like a challenge and getting plants I wouldn’t always think of buying) and received a wide range of plants all needing some TLC but all could be revived. The order included a note with a little detail on what the issue with each plant was and the action needed to help get them back to best.
Wouldn’t advise for first timers or newbies as they will need work but if you like a little challenge and to eventually see your plants thrive then definitely worth it!

Letter from the founder - September 2024 - Sprouts of Bristol
This month we have been busier than expected, which is obviously amazing. We have worked with some amazing businesses, including a very nice doughnut cafe thats opened on College Green that you need to check out. We have welcomed Jazz to the team, she's already settling in amazingly. And we look forward to the end of the year for that ever so special quarter that is very very important to retailers like us up and down the country.

Letter from the founder - August 2024 - Sprouts of Bristol
We have launched our first (hopefully monthly) ‘Letter from the Founder’ blog post. I talk about a string of bad luck, from water gushing from various ceilings in my life to a break-in, and also reflect on the incredible work we have done to win two awards earlier this year. I look ahead to what’s coming up in August, projects we are working on with our clients, and some thoughts about the rest of the year. And I give an insight into my brain, why I am who I am and why I’m so thankful for all the opportunities, passion and excitement that running Sprouts has given me as a founder and as a woman.
