This tall, elegant herb is prized for its slender, pointed leaves that release a powerful lemon scent when crushed. Aloysia citrodora, commonly known as Lemon Verbena, forms an airy, branching shrub that’s perfect for sensory gardens and herbal teas. It thrives in warm, sheltered spots and can be overwintered indoors in colder areas. When in bloom, its delicate pale lilac flowers add charm and attract pollinators.

Aloysia citrodora, commonly known as Lemon Verbena, is a tender perennial grown for its intensely fragrant foliage. It’s a must-have for tea lovers and brings a wonderfully calming presence to the garden.

Tender Perennial

Shrubby, Aromatic foliage, Deciduous

Flowers: July – September

Foliage: May – October (dies back or drops leaves over winter)

Scientific Name
Aloysia citrodora (named after Maria Luisa of Parma, queen consort of Spain – citrodora means “lemon-scented”)

Synonyms
Lippia citriodora

Common Name
Lemon Verbena, Lemon Beebrush

Origin
Native to South America – particularly Argentina, Chile, and Peru

Pruning Tips
Prune lightly in spring as new growth appears. In late autumn, cut back to a low framework if overwintering indoors. Pinch tips through summer to keep bushy

Wildlife Value
Flowers attract bees and butterflies. Foliage deters some pests due to its strong scent

Positioning
Full sun in a warm, sheltered spot. Ideal in pots, conservatories, or against a sunny wall. Must be protected from frost

Water
Keep soil evenly moist in summer, especially in pots. Reduce watering in winter if kept under cover

Soil
Free-draining, fertile soil. Prefers slightly alkaline to neutral conditions

Food
Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season

Pet-safe
Generally non-toxic, but ingestion in large quantities may cause mild stomach upset

Sprouts Top Tips
For a stronger lemon flavour, pick young leaves in the morning. Grow in a pot you can bring indoors or into a greenhouse for winter – Lemon Verbena won’t tolerate frost but will bounce back from leaf drop if kept above 5°C.
