The Nodding Violet gets its name from its vibrant flowers which droop naturally and, in a breeze, seem to nod. Although it is not actually a violet, the flowers, when they bloom, definitely catch the eye! The small, velvety green leaves are evergreen and will keep your plant looking great even when not in bloom. Keep an eye on this plant's moisture levels to make sure it's not getting too soggy or totally dry and it will thank you with lush leaves and pretty petals.
Scientific Name
Streptocarpus caulescens pallescens (twisted fruit, stalk-like, growing pale)
Common Name
Nodding Violet
Origin
Native to Kenya and Tanzania
Light
The Nodding Violet likes bright but indirect light best
Water
Water occasionally, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out between watering.
Humidity
Likes fairly humid air and will benefit from a pebble tray. Keep an eye on the tips of the leaves; if they start to brown and curl, this is a sign that the air is a little dry!
Soil
Use a well-draining houseplant soil to ensure its roots aren't too soggy. A mix with added sand or perlite would work well! Repot every 3-4 years in spring when not in bloom as the plant grows.
Food
Feed every four waters in the growing season, reduce to every six in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Average household temperatures of about 14-20°C are fine- make sure it doesn't drop far below 12°C in winter.
Pet-safe
Yes, but too much nibbling won't be good for pets, small humans or the plant!
Sprouts Top Tips
To look after the flowers while your Streptocarpus is in bloom, make sure the soil doesn't dry out and deadhead to help it bloom even longer!
