Monstera adansonii var. laniata ‘Frozen Freckles’ is a beautiful and unusual climbing houseplant with elongated, heart-shaped leaves featuring distinctive natural holes, known as fenestrations. Its foliage is decorated with creamy-white, mint-green and pale yellow speckles and marbling, creating a wonderfully varied appearance. Each leaf develops its own unique pattern, making this a particularly desirable plant for collectors of variegated Monsteras.

Scientific Name
Monstera adansonii var. laniata ‘Frozen Freckles’

‘Frozen Freckles’ is a horticultural trade name for a variegated form associated with Monstera adansonii var. laniata.

Common Name(s)
Frozen Freckles Monstera, Variegated Monkey Mask, Variegated Monstera Laniata

Origin
The species Monstera adansonii is native to tropical regions of Central and South America, where it grows as a climbing vine in warm, humid rainforests. ‘Frozen Freckles’ is a cultivated variegated selection.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. The pale variegated areas contain less chlorophyll, so good light is particularly important for healthy growth. Avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the lighter sections of the leaves. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright south or west-facing window is ideal.

Water
Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Keep the growing medium lightly moist during active growth but avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 60–80%. Higher humidity can help support healthy leaf development and prevent the pale variegated sections from developing crispy edges. Good airflow is also important.

Soil
Use a chunky, airy and well-draining aroid mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, coco coir and a little peat-free houseplant compost works well. Its roots appreciate plenty of airflow while retaining some moisture.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Avoid overfeeding, particularly if the plant is growing slowly. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and prolonged temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
No. Like other Monsteras, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
Give your ‘Frozen Freckles’ a moss pole or climbing support to encourage larger, more mature leaves with increasingly impressive fenestrations. Plenty of bright, indirect light will help maintain healthy growth and show off its beautiful variegation.

Avoid cutting away leaves simply because they contain large areas of pale colouring. These sections are a natural part of the plant’s appearance, although they can be more delicate than the green areas.

Extras
This Monstera can be grown as a trailing plant, but naturally prefers to climb. As it matures, its leaves can become larger and develop more pronounced fenestrations.

The amount and distribution of variegation can vary considerably between leaves, ranging from fine speckles to larger creamy-white or mint-green patches.

Did You Know?
The name ‘Frozen Freckles’ refers to the pale, frosted-looking speckles scattered across its foliage. Unlike the holes in its leaves, which are a natural characteristic of Monstera adansonii, the creamy and mint-coloured markings are caused by variegation – areas of leaf tissue containing reduced amounts of chlorophyll.
