Often described as the “camouflage plant”, Aglaonema pictum ‘Tricolour’ is prized for its incredible pixelated foliage in shades of deep green, mid green and pale mint. Each leaf looks hand-painted, making it one of the most sought-after foliage houseplants. Slower growing and a little more particular than common Chinese Evergreens, this variety rewards patience with truly standout foliage.

Scientific Name
Aglaonema pictum (painted thread, referring to the patterned leaves) ‘Tricolour’

Member of the Araceae family (the aroid family), which includes genera such as Philodendron, Monstera and Anthurium. It is sometimes incorrectly labelled simply as “Araceae”, which is the family name rather than the plant’s genus.

Synonyms
Sometimes sold simply as Aglaonema ‘Tricolour’ or Camouflage Plant.

Common Name
Tricolour Chinese Evergreen, Camouflage Plant

Origin
The species Aglaonema pictum is native to Sumatra and other parts of Southeast Asia, where it grows on forest floors in humid, shaded rainforest conditions.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate moderate light, too little light may reduce the intensity of its patterning and slow growth further. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Water
Allow the top third of the soil to dry out between waterings. Keep the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged. In winter, reduce watering frequency as growth slows. Always use room-temperature water.

Humidity
Appreciates higher humidity and will thrive in kitchens, bathrooms, or near a humidifier. In drier UK homes, especially during winter, a pebble tray or grouping with other plants can help maintain moisture in the air.

Soil
Use a well-draining, airy houseplant mix with added bark and perlite to mimic its natural forest floor environment. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Food
Feed every 2–4 waters during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and stop over winter.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
This is a slower grower – don’t overpot it. Keeping it slightly snug in its pot encourages healthier root development and reduces the risk of overwatering.
