Scientific Name
Begonia bowerae (Bower's begonia)

Common Name
Eyelash Begonia, Tiger Paw Begonia

Origin
Native to tropical areas of Mexico, especially the Oaxaca and Chiapas states

Description
The delicate colouring of this Begonia's leaves is sure to catch the eye. The pale green in the centre and along the veins of the leaves contrasts with the maroon flesh, colouring which varies slightly between each leaf so they are all unique. New, smaller leaves develop their variegation as they grow, and the stems are also speckled with maroon pigment! Place this plant somewhere with bright light and high humidity and make sure to not get its leaves wet and it will thank you with its beautiful, colourful foliage.

Light
Bright, indirect light is ideal for this plant, but it can stand a little shade too.

Water
Allow the top third of the soil to dry out between waters, and reduce watering in winter and if it's in a shadier spot.

Humidity
Begonias like high humidity, but make sure there is some air circulation too which will prevent your plant getting too soggy.

Soil
A fast-draining but moisture retentive soil mix will work here; one with added coir, bark and grit, or a mix designed for Syngoniums, will be ideal. Repot every couple of years once the plant and its roots completely fill the pot.

Food
Feed every four waters in the growing season, reduce to every six in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Ideal temperature range of 15-26°C; don't let it drop below 12°C in winter.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Begonias don't like getting their leaves wet, so make sure you water onto the soil directly or bottom-water.
