Phoenix roebelenii (small phoenix) is a graceful, slow-growing palm with elegant, arching fronds and delicate feather-like leaves. A popular choice for indoor plant lovers, this compact palm adds a tropical touch to any space and is well-suited to bright rooms or conservatories.

Scientific Name
Phoenix roebelenii (small phoenix)

Common Name
Dwarf Date Palm, Pygmy Date Palm

Origin
Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Laos and Vietnam, where it grows along riverbanks and in tropical forests.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sun. It can adapt to lower light conditions, though growth may slow, and fronds may become sparse.

Water
Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Water less frequently in winter when growth slows. Avoid letting the roots sit in water, as this can lead to root rot.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity. If the air is dry, mist occasionally, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier to prevent leaf browning. Ideal for bathrooms or kitchens where humidity levels are naturally higher.

Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix with added sand or perlite for aeration. A palm-specific or general indoor plant mix works well. Repot every 2–3 years or when roots become crowded.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Avoid exposure to cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C.

Pet-safe
Mildly toxic if ingested; keep away from pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
If the leaf tips start turning brown, check humidity levels and adjust watering—dry air or inconsistent moisture can lead to crispy fronds.
