A reliable and long-flowering perennial, Coreopsis verticillata ‘Zagreb’ produces a profusion of cheerful golden-yellow flowers above finely divided, fern-like foliage from early summer well into autumn. Easy to grow and loved by pollinators, it brings vibrant colour and soft texture to borders, gravel gardens and patio containers.
Scientific Name
Coreopsis verticillata ‘Zagreb’
The genus name Coreopsis comes from the Greek words koris (bug) and opsis (appearance), referring to the shape of the seeds. ‘Zagreb’ is an award-winning cultivar prized for its compact habit and masses of bright yellow flowers.
Common Name(s)
Zagreb Tickseed, Tickseed
Origin
A cultivated variety of Coreopsis verticillata, a species native to eastern and central North America, where it grows in open meadows and prairies.
Light
Thrives in full sun. The more sunshine it receives, the more flowers it will produce. It will tolerate light shade but may flower less abundantly.
Water
Water regularly while establishing. Once established, allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings. It is fairly drought tolerant but performs best with occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.
Humidity
Happy in average outdoor conditions and does not require high humidity.
Temperature
Fully hardy throughout the UK and tolerates temperatures well below freezing once established.
Soil
Prefers free-draining soil and grows well in most garden soils, including sandy and gravelly conditions. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground.
Feeding
Feed once in spring with a balanced fertiliser or incorporate organic matter into the soil before new growth begins. Plants in containers can be fed every 3–4 weeks during the growing season.
Growth Habit
A compact, clump-forming perennial reaching approximately 30–40 cm tall with a spread of 40–50 cm. Its fine, airy foliage provides interest even when not in flower.
Toxicity
Non-toxic to pets and humans.
