This fast-growing evergreen tree produces clouds of fluffy, golden-yellow flowers in late winter to early spring, bringing colour and fragrance to the garden when very little else is in bloom. Acacia dealbata ‘Gaulois’ is a cultivated form selected for its abundant flowering and silvery-blue foliage, which creates a soft, feathery texture in the landscape. Hardy to around –5 °C to –8 °C once established, it thrives in sunny, sheltered gardens and free-draining soil. In favourable conditions it can grow into a small tree, making a striking focal point in Mediterranean-style planting schemes or warm urban gardens.
Mimosa ‘Gaulois’, commonly known as Mimosa or Silver Wattle, is prized for its fragrant pom-pom flowers and delicate fern-like foliage. The blooms appear in dense sprays along the branches and are highly attractive to early pollinating insects. In the UK it performs best in mild areas or sheltered microclimates, such as against a warm wall or in a protected courtyard. In colder regions it can also be grown in a large container and protected during severe frosts.
Evergreen: Small Tree, Fast-growing, Winter Flowering
Flowers: Late winter – early spring
Foliage: Evergreen
Scientific Name
Acacia dealbata ‘Gaulois’
Synonyms
Racosperma dealbatum (historical classification)
Common Name
Mimosa, Silver Wattle
Origin
The species Acacia dealbata is native to south-eastern Australia, particularly New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. It has been cultivated widely in Mediterranean climates around the world.
Pruning Tips
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged wood and shorten overly long branches to keep the tree compact, especially when grown in smaller gardens.
Wildlife Value
The nectar-rich flowers provide an important early-season food source for bees andother pollinating insects emerging at the end of winter.
Positioning
Plant in full sun in a warm, sheltered location, ideally against a south or west-facing wall where it will benefit from reflected warmth. Protection from strong winds and frost pockets will help the plant establish successfully.
Water
Water regularly during the first year while the plant establishes. Once mature it becomes relatively drought tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during long dry spells, especially if grown in containers.
Soil
Prefers well-draining soil and will tolerate sandy or poor soils provided drainage is good. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils which can damage the roots.
Food
Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering. Container-grown plants may benefit from an additional feed in early summer.
Pet-safe
Not considered highly toxic, but ingestion may cause mild stomach upset in pets.
Sprouts Top Tips
If your garden experiences colder winters, plant Mimosa ‘Gaulois’ in a large container so it can be moved to a sheltered spot or protected with fleece during hard frosts.
