With its dramatic striped stems and bold arrow-shaped foliage, Alocasia zebrina ‘Tigrina Superba’ is one of the most architectural houseplants around. This striking cultivar is loved for its tiger-like patterned petioles, which contrast beautifully against its glossy green leaves. More compact and often more heavily patterned than standard Alocasia zebrina, this tropical aroid makes a real statement in bright indoor spaces.
Scientific Name
Alocasia zebrina ‘Tigrina Superba’ (elephant ear plant, zebra-stemmed alocasia)
The genus Alocasia belongs to the Araceae family and is closely related to genera such as Colocasia and Xanthosoma. ‘Tigrina Superba’ is considered a selected form or cultivar of Alocasia zebrina, chosen for its especially bold stem markings and strong growth habit.
Common Name
Tiger Alocasia, Zebra Alocasia, Elephant Ear
Origin
Derived from Alocasia zebrina, which is native to the tropical rainforests of the Philippines.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. A position close to an east or north facing window is ideal. It can tolerate a little gentle morning sun, but harsh direct sunlight may scorch the leaves. Too little light can lead to slower growth and weaker stems.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season, allowing the top few centimetres of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when growth slows. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in water, as Alocasias are prone to root rot if kept too wet.
Humidity
Thrives in higher humidity and will appreciate levels above 60% where possible. Bathrooms, kitchens, terrariums, or rooms with a humidifier can work well. Crisp leaf edges are often a sign that the air is too dry.
Soil
Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing ingredients such as bark, perlite, coir, and potting compost. Good airflow around the roots is essential. Repot every 1–2 years during spring if the plant becomes rootbound.
Food
Feed every 2–4 waters during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and stop completely during winter if the plant is dormant.
Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C, as this plant dislikes the cold and may drop leaves if stressed.
Pet-safe
No. Toxic if ingested by pets or humans due to calcium oxalate crystals.
Sprouts Top Tips
If your Alocasia drops older leaves while producing new ones, don’t panic — this is completely normal for many Alocasias. Consistent warmth, humidity, and bright light will help keep growth steady and encourage larger leaves.
Extras
Like many Alocasias, ‘Tigrina Superba’ may enter partial dormancy during the darker winter months, especially in cooler homes. Growth usually returns strongly in spring with increased warmth and light.
Did You Know?
The striped stems of Alocasia zebrina are thought to help camouflage the plant amongst dappled rainforest vegetation in its native habitat.
