A bold and unusual Begonia, Begonia carolineifolia ‘Highlander’ is loved for its dramatic, palm-like leaves and architectural growth. Each large leaf is deeply divided, creating a striking, almost tropical silhouette, often with subtle red tones along the stems and undersides. It’s a fantastic statement plant that brings texture and structure to any indoor space.
Scientific Name
Begonia carolineifolia (‘Caroline-leaved Begonia’)
Common Name
Palm Leaf Begonia
Origin
Native to Mexico, where it grows in warm, humid environments with filtered light.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some gentle direct sun, but avoid harsh midday rays which may scorch the leaves. Lower light may reduce growth and leaf size.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity. Ideal for kitchens or grouped with other plants. Avoid very dry air, which can lead to crispy leaf edges.
Soil
Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive mix. A blend with compost, perlite, and a bit of bark works well to balance moisture and airflow.
Food
Feed every 2–3 waters during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold drafts.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
If stems start to get leggy, prune them back in spring to encourage fuller, bushier growth and larger leaves.
Extras
This Begonia can develop thick, creeping stems over time, adding to its sculptural, almost bonsai-like appearance.
Did You Know?
Unlike many Begonias grown for flowers, this species is prized almost entirely for its dramatic foliage shape rather than its blooms.
