Occasionally, you may find reused bubble wrap – this has been donated to us, and we encourage you to reuse it too.

Orders are usually packed and dispatched within 2–4 working days. We may occasionally delay dispatch during periods of extreme weather to protect your plants. We always prioritise plant health over speed of delivery.

Carex buchananii, commonly known as Buchanan’s Sedge, is a distinctive evergreen ornamental sedge prized for its fine, upright foliage in rich shades of copper, bronze and cinnamon. Its graceful, arching leaves bring movement and texture to borders throughout the year, making it a fantastic choice for contemporary, gravel and prairie-style gardens.

Unlike many ornamental grasses, this New Zealand native is actually a sedge, offering year-round interest with very little maintenance. It looks particularly striking when planted in groups or paired with plants featuring silver, purple or green foliage, adding warmth and contrast in every season.

Perennial
Evergreen • Architectural • Low Maintenance • Drought Tolerant • Great for Containers • Wildlife Friendly

Flowers
Small, inconspicuous brown flower spikes appear in summer but are not the main ornamental feature.

Foliage
Slender, upright to gently arching evergreen leaves in warm bronze, copper and cinnamon tones provide colour and texture throughout the year.

Scientific Name
Carex buchananii

Common Name
Buchanan’s Sedge, Leatherleaf Sedge

Origin
New Zealand

Pruning Tips
In late winter or early spring, gently comb through the foliage by hand or with a rake to remove dead leaves. Trim away any damaged or untidy foliage as required, but avoid cutting the whole plant back hard.

Wildlife Value
Provides shelter for beneficial insects and adds valuable year-round structure to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Positioning
Thrives in full sun or partial shade. The richest bronze colouring develops in a sunny position, although it also grows well in light shade.

Water
Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant, only requiring additional watering during prolonged dry spells or when grown in containers.

Soil
Prefers moist but well-drained soil and adapts well to sandy, loamy or clay soils, provided drainage is good.

Food
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. Container-grown plants may benefit from occasional feeding during the growing season.

Pet-safe
Generally considered non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses.

Sprouts Top Tips
The warm bronze foliage is at its best when planted alongside silver foliage, deep greens or purple-leaved plants. Plant in groups for maximum impact, and avoid waterlogged soils during winter to keep plants healthy for years to come.
