This mature Juniper bonsai has been carefully trained over time to create its elegant cascading form. The dense evergreen foliage contrasts beautifully against textured bark and the low, shallow ceramic pot, creating a living sculpture that evolves with the seasons.

Juniper bonsai are prized for their resilience, longevity and timeless presence. With proper care, this tree can be enjoyed for decades – and will continue to develop character year after year.

Scientific Name
Juniperus (from the Latin meaning “youth-producing”, referencing its evergreen nature)

Junipers belong to the Cupressaceae family (the cypress family). Many bonsai forms are developed from species such as Juniperus procumbens or Juniperus chinensis, selected for their suitability for long-term shaping and training.

Common Name
Juniper Bonsai

Origin
Juniper species are native across the Northern Hemisphere. Bonsai specimens are cultivated and trained over years to create balanced, miniature interpretations of mature landscape trees.

Light
Requires full sun outdoors. Position in a bright, open setting where it can receive several hours of direct sunlight daily. Junipers are outdoor bonsai and rely on natural seasonal changes to remain healthy.

Water
Keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the surface to begin drying slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly until it drains from the base. Because bonsai pots are shallow, regular monitoring is important, particularly during warmer months.

Soil
Planted in a specialist free-draining bonsai mix to ensure strong root health and prevent waterlogging.

Food
Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced bonsai fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding in winter.

Temperature
Hardy in the UK. Junipers require winter dormancy and tolerate frost, though protection from prolonged severe freezes is beneficial.

Pet-safe
Foliage may cause irritation if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets.

Sprouts Top Tips
Think of this as a long-term companion rather than a houseplant. With patient care and occasional pruning, it will continue to refine its shape and increase in character over time.
