Neither an actual grape vine nor an ivy, grape ivy is a brilliant, easy-care hanging plant. Its textured leaves are formed in interesting shapes, looking almost like oak leaves, and the contrast between the bright green tops of the leaves and their paler underside adds interest to your home display. The plant does well in shadier conditions, and requires little care, so it's ideal for getting some Mediterranean vibes going in spots that other plants may find more difficult (or for anyone who have a tendency to underwater!). Whether you're going to have the plant hanging, climbing or sitting, it's a great addition to your indoor jungle.

Scientific Name
Cissus rhombifolia (rhombus-leaved ivy)

This species has been reclassified as Cissus alata (meaning 'winged ivy'); this happened shortly after it won the RHS' Award of Garden Merit in 1993 under its more familiar name.

Common Name
Grape Ivy, Venezuela Treebine

Origin
Subtropical areas of South and Central America

Light
Used to bright, dappled light, this plant will love a spot with plenty of bright indirect light. It can tolerate some shade but doesn't like deep shade, so make sure it's not in too dark a corner.

Water
Let the top third of the soil dry out between waters, but otherwise keep it evenly moist. It prefers to be slightly too dry than too wet, so if in doubt, you can leave it a couple more days to water. Don't let the soil totally dry out and then soak it, as this subtropical plant won't enjoy this desert-style irrigation!

Humidity
Fine with normal humidity, but thrives with slightly higher humidity. Can benefit from the introduction of a humidity tray- and keep it away from operating radiators or dry draughts.

Soil
Use a soil mix which drains well and retains moisture too - adding some perlite or sand as well as bark and coir can help with this. Re-pot when the roots start to fill the pot, about every 2-3 years.

Food
Feed every four waters in the growing season, reduce to every six in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Happy with normal household temperatures, but try to avoid extended periods where temperatures go above 30°C or below 13°C.

Pet-safe
Pet-safe, however the sap can be a mild skin irritant so is best kept out of the way of little fingers and paws.

Sprouts Top Tips
Sudden loss of leaf is one of the first ways your Grape Ivy will use to show you it's unhappy. If it's within 6 weeks of you buying it, it is probably just getting used to its new environment. Other causes can be overwatering - this plant does not like to be constantly soggy - or not enough light, so check to make sure you aren't letting it sit in soggy soil or in a dark corner.
