Soil Mix Recommendation

With striking, oval leaves and no sinus (leaf notch), Anthurium forgetii stands out in any foliage collection. Its velvety, dark green leaves are etched with bright silvery veins, creating a dramatic, almost futuristic appearance. Native to the cloud forests of Colombia, this rare species prefers a warm, humid environment with gentle light and consistent moisture. A true collector’s plant, A. forgetii adds texture and elegance to any indoor jungle.

Scientific Name
Anthurium forgetii (named in honour of 19th-century botanist M. Forget, who collected the type specimen)

Common Name
Forgetii, Velvet Shield Plant

Origin
Native to Colombia, where it grows as an epiphyte in humid cloud forests.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Too little light can cause slow growth and dull leaf colour.

Water
Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season, allowing the top 2–3 cm to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter, but never allow it to fully dry out. Sensitive to overwatering – always ensure proper drainage.

Humidity
Thrives in high humidity (60–80%). Mist regularly or use a pebble tray or humidifier, especially in heated homes. Ideal for terrariums or warm bathrooms with indirect light.

Soil
Use an airy, well-draining aroid mix – a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat-free compost works well. Good aeration around the roots is key to preventing rot.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding – Anthuriums are light feeders.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Keep above 15°C and away from cold draughts or heat sources like radiators.

Pet-safe
No – toxic if ingested by pets or humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Wipe the velvety leaves occasionally with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust – avoid wetting the foliage. For best growth, keep in a stable spot with steady humidity and temperature.
