A wonderfully unusual foliage begonia with dramatic dark leaves and striking spotted markings, Begonia ‘Black Bat’ is a true collector’s plant. Its deep bronze to almost black foliage is often decorated with contrasting lime green or silvery spotting, while the angular leaf shape gives the plant a bold, bat wing like appearance that inspired its name. Compact yet highly eye catching, this begonia adds texture, contrast, and a tropical feel to terrariums, cabinets, and indoor plant collections.
This begonia thrives in warm, humid conditions and develops richer colouring and stronger contrast when grown in stable environments with bright filtered light.
Scientific Name
Begonia ‘Black Bat’ (cultivar begonia)
Common Name
Black Bat Begonia
Origin
A cultivated foliage begonia selected for its unusually dark foliage, dramatic markings, and distinctive leaf shape.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the foliage and reduce the richness of the dark tones. Lower light may soften the leaf markings and slow growth.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying slightly between waterings. Reduce watering during cooler months when growth naturally slows.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate to high humidity, ideally above 60%. Excellent for terrariums, indoor cabinets, bathrooms, or rooms with a humidifier. Avoid dry air and cold draughts.
Soil
Use a loose, airy, free draining mix rich in organic matter. A combination of fine bark, sphagnum moss, coco coir, and perlite works especially well.
Food
Feed every 2 to 4 waters during spring and summer using a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Consistent humidity helps maintain the deep dark foliage tones and prevents crispy leaf edges. Avoid allowing the compost to stay cold and wet for prolonged periods.
Extras
The dramatic leaf colouring and contrasting spots become more intense as the plant matures, especially when grown in stable warmth with bright filtered light.
Did You Know?
Many dark leaved begonias evolved beneath dense rainforest canopies, where deep pigmentation helps the plant absorb as much filtered light as possible from the forest floor.
