Admired for its shimmering metallic foliage and richly tropical appearance, this Begonia pavonina hybrid combines the famous iridescent qualities of Begonia pavonina with the vigour and unique characteristics of another begonia parent. The velvety leaves display deep green to bronze tones that can develop flashes of electric blue under softer lighting, creating a truly eye catching effect. Compact and full of texture, this rare hybrid is especially popular amongst terrarium growers and collectors of unusual tropical foliage plants.
Thriving in warm, humid conditions, this begonia is ideal for indoor plant cabinets, terrariums, or bright humid rooms where its remarkable foliage can be fully appreciated.
Scientific Name
Begonia pavonina (peacock begonia) Hybrid
Common Name
Peacock Begonia
Origin
Native to the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, where it grows beneath dense forest canopies in warm, humid, shaded conditions.
Light
Prefers low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight completely, as strong light can damage the foliage and reduce the famous blue iridescence. Lower light conditions often enhance the metallic blue effect.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the very top layer of soil to begin drying slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the compost dry out completely for prolonged periods.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity levels above 70%. Best suited to terrariums, indoor plant cabinets, bathrooms, or rooms with a humidifier. Dry air can quickly cause crisping or decline.
Soil
Use a loose, airy, moisture retentive but free draining mix. A blend containing sphagnum moss, fine bark, perlite, and coco coir works particularly well.
Food
Feed every 3 to 4 waters during spring and summer using a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temp
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 16°C and protect from cold draughts or sudden temperature changes.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
For the strongest iridescent blue colouring, grow this begonia in softer light with consistently high humidity. Bright lighting can make the leaves appear more green than blue.
Extras
This species is particularly well suited to enclosed terrariums and humidity cabinets where stable conditions help maintain healthy foliage and vivid colouration.
Did You Know?
The shimmering blue effect on Begonia pavonina is created by microscopic structures inside the leaves called photonic crystals, which help the plant capture limited rainforest light more efficiently.
