Begonia rex ‘Chayo’ is a vibrant and expressive cultivar with deep purple to burgundy leaves, tinged with bright pink streaks and silver accents. The textured, spiralled foliage has a velvety finish and high contrast colouring that makes it a standout in any houseplant collection. Though known for its striking leaves rather than flowers, this variety adds a real pop of colour to indoor spaces – especially when grown in bright, indirect light.

Scientific Name
Begonia rex-cultorum – cultivar: ‘Chayo’

Common Name(s)
Chayo Rex Begonia, Painted-Leaf Begonia

Origin
Part of the Begonia rex-cultorum group – a hybrid group developed from species native to northern India, China, and Southeast Asia

Light
Bright, indirect light will keep the leaf colour vibrant. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Will tolerate moderate light but colours may fade.

Water
Water when the top 2–3cm of soil is dry. Keep lightly moist but never soggy. Sensitive to overwatering – avoid letting it sit in water.

Humidity
Prefers higher humidity (50–60%+). Great for bathrooms, terrariums, or near humidifiers. Avoid misting directly on the leaves, which can cause spotting.

Soil
Use a light, well-draining mix – an aroid or houseplant compost with added perlite works well. Good drainage is key to prevent root and rhizome rot.

Food
Feed every 3–4 weeks in the growing season with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding in winter.

Temp
Happy in 16–24°C. Keep away from cold draughts and do not let temperatures drop below 12°C.

Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested – keep away from pets and small children.

Sprouts Top Tips
Rotate the pot regularly to prevent the plant leaning towards the light. If the plant becomes leggy, pinch back older stems to encourage compact regrowth.

Extras
Begonia rex cultivars can go through rest periods in cooler months – reduce watering slightly if growth slows or leaves drop.

Did You Know?
The name ‘Chayo’ means “cheerful” in some languages – a fitting name for this eye-catching plant with party-ready foliage!
