A vibrant and highly decorative foliage plant, Begonia rex ‘Rumba’ is all about bold colour and intricate patterns. Its swirling leaves combine deep reds, silvers, and dark edges, creating a striking, almost painted effect. Perfect for adding texture and colour to shelves, desks, or plant displays.
Scientific Name
Begonia rex ‘Rumba’ (rex begonia, known for its ornamental foliage)
Common Name
Rex Begonia, Rumba Begonia
Origin
Cultivated hybrid derived from Begonia rex, native to north-eastern India and parts of Southeast Asia.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves and fade their colour, while too little light may dull the patterns.
Water
Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Reduce watering in winter.
Humidity
Thrives in higher humidity. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, or near a humidifier. Avoid misting directly onto the leaves, as this can cause spotting.
Soil
Use a light, well-draining mix. A houseplant compost with added perlite or bark helps prevent waterlogging.
Food
Feed every 2–4 waters during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–24°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and protect from cold drafts.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
If the leaf edges start to crisp, it’s usually a sign of low humidity. Increasing humidity will help keep the foliage looking its best.
Extras
Rex begonias can be a bit sensitive to sudden changes, so try to keep conditions consistent for best results.
Did You Know?
Rex begonias are grown almost entirely for their leaves rather than flowers, with hundreds of cultivars bred for their unique patterns and colours.
