This elegant carnivorous plant forms long, slender leaves covered in glistening sticky hairs that trap small insects. Easy to grow and very rewarding, Drosera capensis is one of the best sundews for beginners and thrives in bright conditions indoors.
Scientific Name
Drosera capensis (Cape sundew)
Common Name
Cape Sundew
Origin
Native to South Africa.
Light
Prefers very bright light. A sunny windowsill or strong indirect light will encourage healthy growth and red colouration on the tentacles.
Water
Water with rainwater, distilled, or deionised water only. Keep the compost consistently moist at all times. Stand the pot in a shallow tray of water during the growing season. Never allow to dry out.
Humidity
Average household humidity is usually sufficient. Avoid very dry air from radiators or heaters.
Soil
Grow in carnivorous plant compost or a peat-free carnivorous mix. Never use standard houseplant compost.
Food
Does not require fertiliser. The plant feeds itself by catching small insects. Never add plant food to the soil.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 15–25°C. Protect from frost and cold draughts.
Pet-safe
Non-toxic, but best kept out of reach to avoid damage to the delicate leaves.
Sprouts Top Tips
If the sticky dew disappears, the plant usually needs more light — brighter conditions help keep the tentacles glistening and active.
