Soft, sprawling, and delightfully wild, Rhipsalis elliptica is a rainforest epiphyte that grows in gentle, leafy chains. Unlike desert cacti, this forest cactus features flat, elliptical stems with a subtle scalloped edge and a fresh green tone that can blush pink in bright light. Perfect for hanging pots, high shelves, or terrariums, it brings effortless texture and movement to your space – no prickles, no fuss, just cascading greenery with a jungle twist.

Scientific Name
Rhipsalis elliptica
(elliptica = referring to the plant’s broad, oval-shaped stem segments)

Common Name
Forest Cactus, Chain Cactus, Rhipsalis elliptica

Origin
Native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly Brazil, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees in warm, humid environments.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Can tolerate gentle morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays which may scorch the stems. Great for bathrooms, plant shelves, or filtered conservatories.

Water
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Rhipsalis prefer consistent moisture but dislike soggy soil. Reduce watering slightly in winter. If grown in a hanging pot, ensure it drains well.

Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. Will do fine in average indoor conditions but thrives with a pebble tray, misting, or naturally humid rooms like kitchens and bathrooms.

Soil
Use a light, well-draining mix, such as an orchid or cactus blend with added bark or perlite. Mimic its natural epiphytic habitat with loose, airy growing conditions.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. No feeding is needed in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Ideal range is 18–26°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 12°C.

Pet-safe
Yes – Rhipsalis species are non-toxic to pets and humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Let it trail! Rhipsalis elliptica looks best when allowed to cascade freely. Turn the pot occasionally for even growth and brighter light can help encourage a subtle pinkish hue on the stem edges.
