With its bold, dappled foliage and upright tropical form, Dieffenbachia ‘Reflector’, also known as the Leopard Lily, brings dramatic flair to your indoor jungle. Its rich green leaves are speckled with lime and yellow, creating a camouflage-like pattern that glows in the light. This striking cultivar makes a beautiful focal point on a plant shelf or as a floor-standing feature in a bright room.
Scientific Name
Dieffenbachia ‘Reflector’
(Dieffenbachia = named after Joseph Dieffenbach, 19th-century Viennese gardener)
Likely a hybrid of Dieffenbachia seguine or a closely related species.
Synonyms
Leopard Lily, Dieffenbachia ‘Reflector’
(Note: We use “Leopard Lily” as a respectful alternative to the outdated and offensive term “dumb cane.”)
Common Name
Leopard Lily, Dieffenbachia Reflector
Origin
Genus native to tropical Central and South America. ‘Reflector’ is a cultivated variety bred for its unique variegated foliage.
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light may fade the variegation and cause leggy growth. Ideal near an east-facing window.
Water
Water when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry. Keep evenly moist during spring and summer, and reduce watering slightly in winter. Always ensure the pot drains well.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. Mist occasionally or group with other plants to help maintain humidity, especially in winter or heated rooms.
Soil
Use a light, well-draining houseplant mix, ideally with added perlite or bark to keep it airy and prevent soggy roots.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced, diluted fertiliser. Pause feeding in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Keep between 18–26°C. Avoid draughts and cold windows, especially in winter.
Pet-safe
No – like other Dieffenbachia species, this plant is toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
Wipe the leaves regularly to keep their patterns looking crisp. Rotate the plant every few weeks to encourage even growth, and prune any leggy stems to maintain a compact shape.
