Colourful, lively, and wonderfully easy-going, the Epidendrum Orchid, often called the Reed-Stem Orchid, produces clusters of small, starry flowers in a wide range of vibrant colours – from fiery reds and oranges to delicate pinks, purples, and even pure whites. These cheerful orchids have tall, reed-like stems and a free-flowering habit, often blooming repeatedly throughout the year when cared for properly. Perfect for bringing a joyful burst of colour to windowsills, balconies, and indoor plant displays.
Scientific Name
Epidendrum spp.
(Epidendrum = from Greek “upon a tree”, referencing their natural epiphytic growing habit)
Common Name
Epidendrum Orchid, Reed-Stem Orchid, Star Orchid
Origin
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, where they grow both as epiphytes on trees and terrestrially in well-draining soils.
Light
Loves bright, indirect light. Epidendrums are sun-lovers compared to many orchids and can tolerate some gentle direct sun, especially morning light. A bright windowsill or lightly shaded greenhouse spot is ideal.
Water
Water when the top third of the potting medium feels dry. Epidendrums appreciate regular watering but prefer to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the roots sit in water.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate humidity (around 50–60%). They can adapt to typical household humidity but will thrive with occasional misting or placement near other plants.
Soil
Use a free-draining orchid mix, preferably one that includes bark, perlite, and a little peat or coco coir. They need excellent airflow around the roots.
Food
Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season (spring to autumn) with a balanced orchid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding slightly in winter.
Temperature
Ideal temperatures are 18–26°C during the day and a slight drop at night. Protect from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 10–12°C.
Pet-safe
Yes – orchids, including Epidendrum species, are non-toxic to pets and humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
To encourage more blooms, make sure your Epidendrum gets enough light – a brighter spot often means more flowers! Regularly remove faded flowers to keep the plant tidy and to focus energy on new growth. These orchids love being a little root-bound, so don’t rush to repot too soon.
