Delicate yet incredibly floriferous, Euphorbia hypericifolia ‘Snow Blizzard’ produces masses of tiny white flowers that create the appearance of a cloud of snow from late spring until the first frosts. Its airy habit makes it perfect for softening containers, hanging baskets and garden borders, where it pairs beautifully with colourful annuals or shines as a feature in its own right.
Scientific Name
Euphorbia hypericifolia ‘Snow Blizzard’
The species name hypericifolia means “with leaves like Hypericum (St John’s Wort)”, referring to the shape of its foliage. ‘Snow Blizzard’ is a cultivated variety selected for its prolific flowering and vigorous growth.
Common Name(s)
Snow Blizzard Spurge, Flowering Spurge
Origin
A cultivated variety of Euphorbia hypericifolia, a species native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas.
Light
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Plants produce the heaviest display of flowers in a bright, sunny position but will also perform well with a little afternoon shade.
Water
Water when the top few centimetres of compost have dried out. Keep the compost evenly moist during the growing season but avoid allowing it to become waterlogged. Established plants are reasonably drought tolerant but flower best with regular watering.
Humidity
Happy in average outdoor humidity and adapts well to typical garden and patio conditions.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 15–30°C. Tender in the UK and should be protected from frost.
Soil
Grow in fertile, free-draining compost or garden soil. For containers, use a high-quality peat-free multipurpose compost with added drainage material if needed.
Feeding
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage continuous flowering.
Growth Habit
A compact, mounding plant that typically reaches 30–45 cm tall with a similar spread. It produces masses of tiny white flowers over a long season, creating a light, airy display.
Toxicity
Toxic if eaten by pets and humans. Like other Euphorbias, it produces a milky white sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Wear gloves when pruning or handling if you have sensitive skin.
