Scientific Name
Streptocarpus saxorum (twisted fruit of the rocks)
Common Name
Cape Primrose, False African Violet
Origin
Found on cliffs and rock faces in Kenya and Tanzania
Light
Likes bright, indirect light; not enough sun to melt a chocolate bar, but not overly shady as this can keep the soil too soggy.
Water
Allow the top layer of soil to dry between watering; make sure the plant is not sat in soggy soil or completely bone-dry.
Humidity
Average humidity is fine for the False African Violet, just make sure it's not too near a radiator or sat in a draught!
Soil
Use a well-draining houseplant soil to ensure its roots aren't too soggy. A mix with added sand or coir would work well! Repot every 3-4 years in spring when not in bloom as the plant grows.
Food
Feed every four waters in the growing season, reduce to every six in autumn and winter.
Temperature
Average household temperatures of about 14-28°C are ideal- make sure it doesn't drop far below 12°C in winter.
Pet-safe
Yes, but too much nibbling won't be good for pets, small humans or the plant!
Sprouts Top Tips
To look after the flowers while your Streptocarpus is in bloom, make sure the soil doesn't dry out and deadhead to help it bloom even longer!

This stuff has transformed the grottiest strip of earth ever into a thing of beauty. A couple of tree stumps were present already and I placed a couple of rocks randomly to complete the look. I`m crazy about my moss garden and it intrigues passers by. Did a few square metres last Summer and added to it this month.......both lots were from Sprouts. It arrives well boxed and cut into "squares". You just slap it down and water it in basically. I`m thrilled with it. Thanks Sprouts!
