This compact, globular cactus is known for its chunky ribs, subtle spines, and beautiful, funnel-shaped flowers that range from pale pink to white. Native to South America, Gymnocalycium pflanzii thrives with minimal fuss and is perfect for windowsills or sunny shelves. Its name, meaning “naked calyx,” refers to the smooth outer floral tube – a key feature of this genus.
Scientific Name
Gymnocalycium pflanzii (from Greek gymnos, “naked”, and kalyx, “calyx”, plus the species name pflanzii, honouring German botanist Julius Pflanzi)
Originally described in the early 20th century. The Gymnocalycium genus includes over 70 species, most native to Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. This species is known for its ease of flowering and unusual short spines.
Common Name(s)
Chin Cactus, Pflanzii Cactus
Origin
Native to Bolivia and northern Argentina, typically found growing in arid, rocky grasslands
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun. Morning or late afternoon sun is ideal – harsh midday sun through glass can scorch the plant. Slowly acclimate to increased light to avoid damage.
Water
Water thoroughly when the soil is fully dry – usually every 2–3 weeks in summer and far less in winter. Always allow excess water to drain fully. In winter, water sparingly or not at all.
Humidity
Low humidity preferred. Avoid placing in steamy rooms like kitchens or bathrooms.
Soil
Use a gritty, well-draining cactus mix with added sand or perlite. Avoid any soil that retains moisture. Repot every 2–3 years in spring to refresh soil and check root health.
Food
Feed every 6–8 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Do not feed in winter dormancy.
Temp
Prefers 18–26°C during the growing season. Tolerates cooler temperatures down to around 5°C in winter if kept completely dry.
Pet-safe
Non-toxic – but spines may cause injury, so keep out of reach of pets and small children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Gymnocalyciums are among the easiest cacti to flower – if yours isn’t blooming, try giving it a cooler, dry winter rest followed by a springtime boost in light and feeding.
Extras
Flowers usually emerge from the crown and can last several days. With age, this cactus may produce offsets at the base.
Did You Know?
Because of its short, stubby spines and compact shape, Gymnocalycium pflanzii is a favourite among collectors and beginners alike – perfect for small pots and sunny windowsills.
