Homalomena rubescens ‘Candid’ is a striking tropical houseplant with lush, heart-shaped foliage patterned with creamy white and green variegation. Its bold leaves and compact, bushy growth make it an unusual alternative to more familiar aroids and a beautiful addition to a bright indoor plant collection.

Scientific Name
Homalomena rubescens ‘Candid’

Common Name(s)
Candid Homalomena, Queen of Hearts

Origin
Homalomena rubescens is native to tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, where it grows in warm, humid forest environments.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Good light will help maintain the variegation, but avoid strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the paler areas of the leaves.

Water
Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, allowing the top few centimetres to dry between waterings. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in water, as this can lead to root rot. Water less frequently during the cooler months when growth slows.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity. Aim for around 50–70% where possible and keep away from radiators, cold draughts and other sources of dry air.

Soil
Use a rich, loose and well-draining soil mix. A good-quality houseplant compost with added perlite and orchid bark works well.

Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.

Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
No. Homalomena contains calcium oxalate crystals and can cause irritation if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
The pale variegated sections contain less chlorophyll, so give ‘Candid’ plenty of bright, indirect light to help maintain strong growth and attractive colouring. Avoid intense direct sunshine, which can easily scorch the lighter foliage.

Extras
Homalomenas belong to the aroid family, Araceae, alongside popular houseplants such as Philodendrons, Monsteras and Alocasias. They appreciate similarly warm and humid growing conditions.

Did You Know?
The name rubescens comes from the Latin for “reddening” or “becoming red”, referring to the reddish tones commonly found on the stems and petioles of the species.
