Delicate, colourful and wonderfully easy to grow, Hoya heuschkeliana ‘Outer Variegated’ is a beautiful collector’s plant with small, rounded leaves edged in creamy white to soft yellow variegation. The contrasting margins frame the rich green centres, creating a bright, cheerful display all year round. Its compact trailing stems make it ideal for hanging pots or displaying on a shelf, where the cascading growth can be fully appreciated. Given the right conditions, mature plants produce clusters of tiny, waxy flowers in shades of soft pink, often with a sweet fragrance reminiscent of butterscotch or caramel.

Scientific Name
Hoya heuschkeliana ‘Outer Variegated’

Common Name
Variegated Wax Plant, Porcelain Flower, Wax Vine

Origin
Hoya heuschkeliana is native to the Philippines, where it grows as an epiphyte in warm, humid forests. ‘Outer Variegated’ is a cultivated form selected for its attractive cream-edged foliage.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or late afternoon sun can help maintain strong variegation, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.

Water
Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. Variegated Hoyas generally grow a little more slowly than their green counterparts, so take care not to overwater, particularly during winter.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. Good airflow and occasional increased humidity will encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Soil
Grow in a chunky, free-draining houseplant mix containing bark, perlite and peat-free compost or coco coir. Excellent drainage is essential for healthy roots.

Food
Feed every three to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, chewing any houseplant may cause mild stomach upset in some pets.

Sprouts Top Tips
Bright light is the key to keeping the beautiful cream variegation crisp and colourful. Avoid overwatering, as the thick leaves store moisture well, and don’t trim away long, leafless vines—they’re often where new leaves and flower spurs will develop. Once established, this charming Hoya is a reliable bloomer and can flower repeatedly from the same spurs, so leave them in place after the flowers fade.
