Compact, beautifully fragrant and incredibly rewarding to grow, Hoya lacunosa ‘Asami’ is a charming collector’s Hoya with elegant trailing vines and small, textured leaves. This attractive clone forms a dense, cascading plant, making it perfect for hanging pots or displaying on a shelf where its delicate foliage can be appreciated. Mature plants are prolific bloomers, producing clusters of soft cream flowers with bright yellow centres. Their sweet, spicy fragrance becomes especially noticeable in the evening, making this one of the most delightfully scented Hoyas to grow indoors.

Scientific Name
Hoya lacunosa ‘Asami’

Common Name
Wax Plant, Porcelain Flower, Wax Vine

Origin

Hoya lacunosa is native to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the surrounding regions of Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte in warm, humid forests. ‘Asami’ is a collector’s clone selected within the horticultural trade.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from a little gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Brighter conditions encourage compact growth and increase the chances of flowering, but avoid prolonged harsh midday sun.

Water
Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. Hoya lacunosa prefers to dry slightly between waterings and should never be left sitting in water.

Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. Good airflow and slightly higher humidity will encourage vigorous growth and regular flowering.

Soil
Grow in a chunky, free-draining houseplant mix containing bark, perlite and peat-free compost or coco coir. Excellent drainage is essential to keep the roots healthy.

Food
Feed every three to four weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C and should be protected from temperatures below 15°C.

Pet-safe
Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, chewing any houseplant may cause mild stomach upset in some pets.

Sprouts Top Tips
Hoya lacunosa is one of the easiest Hoyas to encourage into flower. Give it plenty of bright, indirect light, avoid overwatering, and don’t be tempted to remove old flower spurs after blooming—they’ll often produce fresh flowers again and again. If you’re looking for a Hoya that combines beautiful foliage with wonderfully fragrant blooms, ‘Asami’ is an excellent choice.
