Hoya PMP176 ‘Joy’ × ‘Jennifer’ is an unusual collector’s Hoya hybrid with attractive, substantial foliage and a climbing or trailing growth habit. A cross between ‘Joy’ and ‘Jennifer’, it combines characteristics from both parent plants and makes a fantastic choice for Hoya enthusiasts looking for something a little different.
Scientific Name
Hoya PMP176 ‘Joy’ × ‘Jennifer’
Common Name(s)
Wax Plant, Hoya PMP176
Origin
A cultivated Hoya hybrid. Its parent plants originate from Hoya species native to tropical and subtropical parts of Asia.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or evening sun can encourage healthy growth and flowering, but avoid prolonged strong midday sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings before watering thoroughly. Hoyas prefer to dry slightly rather than remain constantly wet. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth slows.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to average household conditions. Higher humidity can encourage stronger growth, particularly when combined with good airflow.
Soil
Requires a loose, airy and well-draining growing medium. A houseplant mix amended generously with orchid bark and perlite works well.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
Yes, Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Sprouts Top Tips
Give this Hoya something to climb if you want to encourage larger, more established growth, or allow the vines to trail naturally. Avoid cutting off old flower spurs, known as peduncles, as Hoyas can flower repeatedly from the same point.
Extras
As a cultivated hybrid, individual plants can show some variation in leaf shape, colouring and markings. Given the right conditions and maturity, it can also produce the characteristic clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers for which Hoyas are loved.
Did You Know?
The “PMP176” in its name is a hybrid or collection identifier used to distinguish this particular Hoya cross. Plants grown from hybrid crosses can display a fascinating mixture of characteristics inherited from both parents.
