The Pink Polka Dot Plant stands out thanks to the beautiful baby pink variegation on its mid-green leaves. Adding a splash of colour to your terrarium or planting arrangement, this plant will thrive amongst other plants which help keep the local humidity higher. Keep this plant happy with consistently moist soil, humid air and indirect light and it will keep you smiling at its gorgeous colour.

Scientific Name
Hypoestes phyllostachya (under-the-home plant with a leaf spike)

Synonyms: Eranthemum sanguinolentum, Hypoestes sanguinolenta

Originally published in 1887, this species has kept its name since then. Different varieties have been selectively bred for cultivation.

Common Name(s)
Pink Polka Dot Plant, Freckle Face, Splash Plant

Origin
Native to wet tropical parts of Madagascar.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves.

Water
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings.

Humidity
Enjoys higher humidity levels; place on a humidity tray or keep in a terrarium for best results.

Soil
A mix that retains plenty of moisture whilst draining well is a good choice here. Choose one with components like coir, perlite and vermiculite to provide this balance; a mix designed for Calatheas and Marantas with work well. Use one designed for terrariums in a terrarium. Repot every couple of years in Spring as the plant grows.

Food
Feed every four waters during the growing season (spring and summer), using a fertiliser designed for houseplants, and reduce to every six in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 18-24°C; make sure it doesn't dip below 12°C and avoid cold draughts.

Pet-safe
Yes: this plant is non-toxic to pets, though too much nibbling is not great for furry friends or for the plant.

Sprouts Top Tips
To maintain a bushy shape, pinch back the stems regularly. This encourages new growth and keeps the plant compact.
The colourful foliage of Hypoestes can fade in low light, so if you notice the colours fading, providing brighter conditions will help it regain that colour.

Extras
Ideal for terrariums and mixed plant arrangements.
