A graceful, deciduous shrub with a naturally arching habit, Indigofera heterantha produces airy clusters of rosy-pink, pea-like flowers from early summer to early autumn. Its soft, divided foliage and long flowering period make it a lovely choice for mixed borders, informal gardens, or wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Despite its exotic appearance, it’s surprisingly hardy and thrives in well-drained, sunny spots.

Indigofera heterantha, commonly known as Himalayan Indigo, offers long-season colour and texture, and works beautifully as a feature plant or in naturalistic designs.

Perennial / Shrub
Arching, Flowering, Summer–Autumn Interest
Flowers: June–September
Foliage: Spring–Autumn (deciduous)

Scientific Name
Indigofera heterantha (from Latin indigo = indigo dye, and ferre = to bear; heterantha = “different-flowered”)

Synonyms
Indigofera gerardiana, Indigofera floribunda

Common Name
Himalayan Indigo

Origin
Native to the western Himalayas – including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, and northern India

Pruning Tips
Cut back hard in early spring to encourage strong new growth and keep the plant compact. Can also be pruned lightly after flowering if needed.

Wildlife Value
Flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Offers light cover for insects and small wildlife.

Positioning
Full sun is essential for best flowering and compact growth. Ideal for south- or west-facing borders, gravel gardens, or sheltered spots.

Water
Water regularly during dry spells in the first year. Once established, moderately drought-tolerant.

Soil
Well-drained soil is crucial. Prefers light, sandy or loamy soils. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained sites.

Food
Not a heavy feeder – a mulch of compost in spring is usually sufficient. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds.

Pet-safe
Generally considered non-toxic, but ingestion is not advised – best kept out of reach of pets and children.

Sprouts Top Tips
Pair with silver-foliaged or drought-tolerant companions like Perovskia or Stachys byzantina to enhance its airy, romantic look and create a soft, sun-loving border.
