This unique, evergreen perennial features striking, twisted foliage that creates a spiraling effect, adding an eye-catching architectural element to your garden or water feature. Hardy down to -10°C, this variety of rush is ideal for damp, boggy conditions, or even in containers around a pond. Its unusual form and resilience make it a favourite for modern garden designs.
Juncus effusus f. spiralis, commonly known as Corkscrew Rush, is a decorative rush plant with corkscrew-shaped stems that twist and spiral as they grow. These twists add dynamic texture and movement to any garden, particularly in moist or wet areas. The plant’s green stems are accentuated by its upright growth habit, making it perfect for water edges, bog gardens, or containers. Corkscrew Rush is known for its tolerance to wet conditions and is a popular choice for garden ponds and water features.

Scientific Name
Juncus effusus f. spiralis (twisted, rush-like plant, variety: spiralis)
Common Name
Corkscrew Rush, Spiral Rush
Origin
Native to Europe and parts of Asia, it is commonly found in wetlands and marshy areas.
Pruning Tips
Remove any dead stems or foliage in early spring to make room for new growth. If the plant becomes too large, you can also divide it in the spring.
Wildlife Value
Corkscrew Rush can provide a habitat for small wildlife, including insects and amphibians, especially in water features.
Positioning
Prefers damp, boggy soil or the edges of ponds, lakes, and other wetland areas. It can also be grown in containers placed in water.
Water
Requires consistently moist soil, or the roots should be submerged in shallow water for best results.
Soil
Thrives in moist, well-draining soil, but can tolerate wetter conditions. Ensure the soil is not too dry, as it may affect the plant’s growth.
Food
Fertilise lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser in the growing season, especially if growing in a container or poor soil.
Pet-safe
Generally considered non-toxic, but it’s always best to prevent pets from chewing on the plant.
Sprouts Top Tips
If growing in a water feature, make sure the plant is either partially submerged or planted in a boggy spot where it can stay moist year-round. For best results, place in a location where it will be sheltered from strong winds.
