A charming, aromatic oregano with small green leaves edged in creamy white, bringing both flavour and ornamental interest to herb gardens and containers. Variegated oregano forms a low, spreading mound of fragrant foliage and produces clusters of soft pink flowers in summer that are adored by pollinators.

As well as being a beautiful addition to sunny patios and borders, the leaves can be used in the kitchen just like common oregano, adding a gentle Mediterranean flavour to pizzas, pasta dishes, roasted vegetables and salads. Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established, it’s a fantastic herb for beginner gardeners and seasoned cooks alike.

Annual or Perennial: Herbaceous perennial

Type: Culinary herb

Style: Mediterranean, cottage garden, wildlife garden, kitchen garden, container planting

Months of Interest: April – October (flowers typically July – September)

Scientific Name: Origanum vulgare ‘Variegata’

Common Name: Variegated Oregano

Origin: Origanum vulgare is native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia. ‘Variegata’ is a cultivated variety selected for its attractive cream-edged foliage.

Light: Thrives in full sun and develops the best foliage colour and flavour in a warm, bright position.

Water: Water regularly while establishing. Once mature, oregano is drought tolerant and prefers to be kept slightly on the dry side. Avoid sitting in wet soil, especially during winter.

Soil: Prefers free-draining soil and thrives in sandy or gritty conditions. Add horticultural grit to heavier soils or use a peat-free compost mixed with grit when growing in containers.

Feed: Requires very little feeding. A light application of balanced fertiliser in spring is sufficient for container-grown plants.

Pruning Tips: Trim lightly after flowering to keep plants neat and encourage fresh growth. Cut back any dead stems in early spring before new growth begins.

Wildlife Value: The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Hardiness: Fully hardy in most parts of the UK, tolerating temperatures down to around -15°C once established.

Sprouts Top Tip: Plant near the front of a border or in a decorative pot where the beautiful variegated foliage can be appreciated up close.

Did You Know? Oregano’s name comes from the Greek words oros (mountain) and ganos (joy), meaning “joy of the mountain” – a fitting name for this sun-loving Mediterranean herb.
