A bold and elegant coleus, Coleus ‘Crimson Ruffles’ is prized for its deeply ruffled, velvety foliage in rich shades of crimson, burgundy and deep purple. The dramatically frilled leaf edges add extra texture and movement, making this cultivar a standout feature in the home or in sheltered summer containers.

Scientific Name
Coleus ‘Crimson Ruffles’

Common Name(s)
Coleus, Painted Nettle

Origin
A cultivated hybrid developed from tropical Coleus species native to Southeast Asia.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or evening sun helps maintain the richest foliage colours, while strong midday sun can scorch the leaves.

Water
Keep the compost evenly moist, allowing the top 2–3cm to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as this can lead to wilting and leaf drop.

Humidity
Prefers average to high humidity but adapts well to normal household conditions. Increased humidity encourages lush, healthy foliage.

Temperature
Grows best between 18–27°C. Protect from temperatures below 10°C and avoid cold draughts.

Soil
Use a fertile, free-draining peat-free houseplant compost. Adding a little perlite helps improve drainage while retaining adequate moisture.

Feed
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Growth
A fast-growing, bushy plant reaching approximately 30–60cm tall and wide indoors. Regular pinching encourages a compact, well-branched shape.

Flowers
Produces small spikes of pale blue to lavender flowers during the growing season. These are usually removed to encourage continued foliage growth.

Toxicity
Toxic to cats, dogs and horses if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets.

Top Tips

  • Pinch out growing tips regularly to encourage a fuller, bushier plant.
  • Remove flower spikes promptly to keep the plant focused on producing vibrant foliage.
  • Rotate the pot every few weeks to maintain even growth.
  • Easy to propagate from stem cuttings in water or directly into compost.
  • Can be grown outdoors in summer once all risk of frost has passed but should be brought indoors before temperatures fall below 10°C.
