Bold, architectural, and full of character, Philodendron ‘Narrow Escape’ is known for its long, slender leaves with distinctive, jagged edges that give it the nickname Tiger Tooth Plant. As it matures, the foliage becomes more dramatic and sculptural, creating a striking, jungle-inspired look. It’s a brilliant choice if you’re after something a little different that still feels easygoing and rewarding to grow.
Scientific Name
Philodendron ‘Narrow Escape’ (ornamental cultivar, named for its narrow, elongated foliage)
Synonyms
Often shortened to Philodendron ‘Narrow’ in the trade, though ‘Narrow Escape’ is the correct cultivar name
Common Name
Tiger Tooth Plant, Tiger Tooth Philodendron
Origin
Cultivar derived from tropical Philodendron species native to Central and South America
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate moderate light conditions. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away. Reduce watering in winter
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to higher humidity but adapts well to typical household conditions
Soil
Use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix with bark and perlite to support healthy root growth
Food
Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold drafts
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children
Sprouts Top Tips
If you want larger, more dramatic leaves, give it something to climb. A moss pole will encourage stronger growth and more defined leaf shape as it matures.
