As useful in the kitchen as it is beautiful in the garden, this trailing variety of rosemary brings a soft, cascading form to Mediterranean-style planting. Perfect for spilling over the edges of pots, raised beds, and walls, it adds movement, texture, and fragrance while still offering all the culinary benefits of traditional rosemary. An excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens and sun-drenched outdoor spaces.

Perennial

Evergreen, Trailing and spreading, Aromatic foliage

Flowers: March – May (with occasional repeat flowering later in the season)

Foliage: Year-round

Scientific Name
Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Prostratus’ (dew of the sea, trailing form)

Common Name
Trailing Rosemary, Creeping Rosemary

Origin
Mediterranean species, with prostrate cultivars selected for their low-growing, spreading habit

Pruning Tips
Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh, trailing growth. Avoid cutting into old woody stems, as regrowth can be slow

Wildlife Value
Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, especially early in the season when nectar is limited

Positioning
Full sun in a well-drained, sheltered position. Ideal for containers, hanging over walls, raised beds, or the edges of borders where it can cascade naturally

Water
Water during dry spells in the first year. Once established, it is very drought tolerant

Soil
Well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil. Avoid heavy or waterlogged conditions, particularly in winter

Food
Rarely required. A light mulch of compost in spring is sufficient

Pet-safe
Generally considered non-toxic to pets

Sprouts Top Tips
Use trailing rosemary to soften the edges of pots or raised beds – it’s perfect for adding that relaxed, Mediterranean feel while staying beautifully low-maintenance.
