A classic miniature African violet, ‘Little Blue Boy’ is cherished for its charming clusters of soft blue-violet flowers above neat rosettes of velvety green leaves. Compact and floriferous, it’s a wonderful choice for brightening windowsills, desks, or small plant shelves, flowering repeatedly through the year when cared for well.
Scientific Name
Saintpaulia ionantha ‘Little Blue Boy’ (commonly used in horticulture; now reclassified as Streptocarpus ionanthus, section Saintpaulia)
Synonyms
Streptocarpus sect. Saintpaulia; Streptocarpus ionanthus ‘Little Blue Boy’
Common Name
African Violet, Mini African Violet
Origin
Cultivated variety; original wild species native to the cloud forests of Tanzania and south-eastern Kenya.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. A north- or east-facing windowsill works well. Avoid direct, hot sun which can scorch leaves, and use grow lights to supplement light in darker months.
Water
Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water from the base to prevent marks on the velvety foliage. Allow the top layer of compost to dry slightly between waterings. Always use room-temperature water.
Humidity
Thrives in moderate humidity. Avoid misting directly onto leaves; instead, use a pebble tray or place near other plants to maintain a comfortable level of moisture in the air.
Soil
Use a free-draining African violet compost or a light potting mix with added perlite. Repot every 1–2 years in spring, choosing a pot just slightly larger than the root ball.
Food
Feed every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer with a fertiliser formulated for flowering houseplants or African violets. Reduce feeding during winter.
Temperature
Best kept at 18–24°C. Protect from sudden chills, draughts, or placement near unheated windows in winter.
Pet-safe
Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Sprouts Top Tips
Encourage more blooms by removing faded flowers and keeping the crown of the plant free of old leaves. This helps ‘Little Blue Boy’ channel energy into fresh growth and new buds.
Extras
This variety is especially popular for its soft lavender-blue tones, making it a standout in any mini African violet collection.
