Graceful and architectural, Sphaeropteris cooperi, commonly known as the Lacy Tree Fern, is a fast-growing tree fern with delicately divided fronds and a slender, textured trunk. Native to the subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia, it brings height, movement, and lush, prehistoric charm to any space – whether nestled in a shaded garden corner or adding a tropical flair indoors. With the right care, it’s a long-living feature plant that grows more striking with age.
Scientific Name
Sphaeropteris cooperi
(Sphaeropteris = “round fern”, from Greek; cooperi = named after Sir Daniel Cooper)
Synonyms
Cyathea cooperi (former classification), Australian Tree Fern, Cooper’s Tree Fern, Scaly Tree Fern
Common Name
Lacy Tree Fern, Australian Tree Fern, Cooper’s Tree Fern
Origin
Native to the subtropical and tropical rainforests of eastern Australia, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland, where it grows in shaded, moist forest understories.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Indoors, place near a filtered light source such as an east- or north-facing window. Outdoors, avoid hot afternoon sun to prevent frond scorch.
Water
Keep the soil consistently moist – never dry, but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid pouring water directly into the crown to reduce the risk of rot.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity. Use a pebble tray, misting, or humidifier indoors. Outdoors, it prefers naturally damp, sheltered spots.
Soil
Use a rich, free-draining organic mix – a combination of peat-free compost, leaf mould, and perlite or bark works well. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7) is ideal.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. No feeding required in winter.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 16–26°C. Outdoors, it can tolerate light frost once established, but protect young plants from temperatures below 5°C.
Pet-safe
Yes – this fern is non-toxic to pets and humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
Perfect for bringing tropical height to shaded spots – either in the home or garden. Remove old fronds at the base as they yellow to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. Best grown in a large pot or protected, humid border.
