We love the ZZ plant and its low-maintenance foliage so of COURSE we love this rare variegated version too. The signature glossy, deep green foliage of the ZZ is here contrasted with a pale yellow variegation on the tips of the branches, with the upper leaves being almost entirely yellow with just a hint of forest green veining, and the lower leaves having some smudges of yellow amongst the dark green. Whilst its care needs are mostly similar to its laid back cousin, this ZZ is less tolerant of shade due to the variegation. But as long as you let it get some sun, it'll be happy. Add this super unusual stunner to your collection and admire its gorgeous foliage whilst sitting back and knowing it doesn't need a lot from you.

Scientific Name
Zamioculcas zamiifolia variegata (Zamia's Colocasia (Lotus-root) with Zamia's leaves, variety: variegated)

This plant is the only species in its genus, meaning there are no plants that are very closely related to it!

Common Name
Variegated ZZ Plant, Variegated Zuzu Plant, Variegated Zanzibar Gem, Variegated Aroid Palm, Variegated Eternity Plant, Variegated Emerald Palm

Origin
Native to East Africa, from Kenya to South Africa.

Light
Make sure your variegated ZZ Plant gets some direct sun; due to its high level of variegation, it is less tolerant of low light levels. If you notice new growth has less variegation, you may need to move it to a brighter spot.

Water
The perfect plant for forgetful indoor gardeners, the ZZ Plant likes to dry out fully between waters; make sure it has less water in shadier locations, and water less frequently in winter too.

Humidity
This plant will be fine with low humidity; if it's in a more humid environment, don't mist it or it could start to rot, and otherwise just hose it down to get rid of dust on its leaves as needed.

Soil
Use a well-draining mix, with added sand and grit - similar to cacti, ZZ Plants hate soggy soil. Repot every two years only as necessary; the ZZ Plant would rather move later than too soon.

Food
Fertilise every three months; make sure to water it first so as not to burn your roots!

Temperature
Keep it between 15-25°C; the only point this plant is fussy on is the cold, so keep it indoors and warm!

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
