With its tightly twisted rosette of deep green leaves edged with pale silver-green bands, Sansevieria ‘Hahnii Spiral Star’ is a compact, sculptural houseplant that adds effortless style to any space. Slow-growing, incredibly resilient and easy to care for, it’s an excellent choice for beginners as well as experienced plant collectors.

Scientific Name
Dracaena trifasciata ‘Hahnii Spiral Star’

Formerly classified as Sansevieria, this plant was reclassified into the genus Dracaena following DNA research. The name Sansevieria remains widely used throughout the horticultural trade, which is why you’ll often still see it sold under its former name.

Common Name(s)
Spiral Star Snake Plant, Bird’s Nest Snake Plant

Origin
A cultivated variety of Dracaena trifasciata, a species native to tropical West Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky habitats beneath open woodland.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light, but is exceptionally adaptable. It will also tolerate lower light conditions and some direct morning or evening sun. Brighter conditions encourage stronger growth and more defined leaf markings.

Water
Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow any excess water to drain away. Reduce watering significantly during autumn and winter, as overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Humidity
Happy in average household humidity and does not require additional humidity, making it ideal for homes and offices.

Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 15–30°C. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C and protect from frost.

Soil
Plant in a free-draining cactus or succulent compost, or a well-draining houseplant mix with added perlite or horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Feeding
Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength. Feeding is not usually necessary during autumn and winter.

Growth Habit
A slow-growing, compact variety that forms a dense rosette of spiralling foliage. Typically reaches 15–25 cm tall and wide, making it ideal for desks, shelves, windowsills and smaller spaces.

Toxicity
Toxic if eaten by pets and humans. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
