With its broad, upright leaves in soft silvery-blue tones, Sansevieria kirkii ‘Silver Blue’ is an elegant and highly sought-after snake plant. Its architectural form, subtle colouring and easy-going nature make it a striking addition to modern interiors, while its drought tolerance makes it one of the easiest houseplants to care for.
Scientific Name
Dracaena kirkii ‘Silver Blue’
Formerly classified as Sansevieria, this plant was reclassified into the genus Dracaena following DNA research. The name Sansevieria remains widely used throughout the horticultural trade, which is why you’ll often still see it sold under its former name.
Common Name(s)
Silver Blue Snake Plant, Silver Blue Sansevieria
Origin
A cultivated form of Dracaena kirkii, a species native to eastern Africa, where it grows in dry woodlands and rocky habitats.
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light, but is highly adaptable and will also tolerate lower light conditions. Some gentle morning or evening sun is beneficial and helps maintain the attractive silvery colouring.
Water
Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Water sparingly during autumn and winter, as overwatering is the most common cause of problems.
Humidity
Perfectly suited to average household humidity and does not require additional humidity.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 15–30°C. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C and protect from frost.
Soil
Plant in a free-draining cactus or succulent compost, or a well-draining houseplant mix with added perlite or horticultural grit to prevent waterlogging.
Feeding
Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength. Feeding is not usually required during autumn and winter.
Growth Habit
A slow-growing, upright succulent with broad, gently arching leaves arranged in an attractive rosette. Mature plants typically reach 40–60 cm tall, gradually producing offsets to form a clump over time.
Toxicity
Toxic if eaten by pets and humans. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
