Bursting with vibrant red flower buds from late summer through autumn, Calluna vulgaris ‘Garden Girls Red’ is a colourful evergreen heather that provides long-lasting seasonal interest. Its neat, compact habit makes it perfect for patio pots, window boxes, borders and autumn displays, where it pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, cyclamen and other seasonal favourites.

Scientific Name
Calluna vulgaris ‘Garden Girls Red’

‘Garden Girls’ is a popular series of cultivated heathers, selected for their colourful, long-lasting flower buds and compact growth.

Common Name(s)
Garden Girls Heather, Red Heather, Scottish Heather

Origin
A cultivated variety of Calluna vulgaris, a species native to heathlands, moorlands and open woodlands across Europe, including the UK.

Light
Thrives in full sun but will tolerate light partial shade. The brightest flower colour and healthiest growth are achieved in a sunny position.

Water
Keep the compost evenly moist, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Do not allow the compost to dry out completely, particularly when grown in containers.

Humidity
Happy in average outdoor conditions and does not require additional humidity.

Temperature
Fully hardy throughout the UK and well suited to year-round outdoor growing.

Soil
Prefers acidic, free-draining soil or ericaceous compost. Avoid alkaline soils, which can lead to poor growth and yellowing foliage.

Feeding
Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for ericaceous (acid-loving) plants. Container-grown plants can be fed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.

Growth Habit
A compact, bushy evergreen shrub reaching approximately 20–30 cm tall with a similar spread. Its colourful flower buds provide interest from late summer into autumn, while the evergreen foliage offers year-round structure.

Toxicity
Non-toxic to pets and humans.

Extra Tips
* Perfect for autumn containers, window boxes and seasonal planting schemes.
* Water regularly during dry spells, especially if grown in pots.
* Remove faded flower stems in spring to encourage bushy new growth.
* Always use ericaceous compost when growing in containers.
* A valuable late-season source of nectar for bees and other pollinators when flowers open.
