A beautiful trailing houseplant, Nematanthus radicans is known for its glossy leaves and unusual tubular flowers that resemble tiny goldfish. This variegated form adds extra interest with cream and green marbled foliage, creating a striking contrast against the bright orange blooms when the plant flowers. Its gently cascading stems make it perfect for hanging pots, shelves, or trailing displays.
Like other members of the Gesneriad family, Nematanthus species often grow as epiphytes in tropical forests, clinging to tree branches where they receive filtered light and warm, humid air. When grown indoors, this easy-going plant rewards good care with glossy foliage and cheerful flowers that appear mainly in spring and summer.
Scientific Name
Nematanthus radicans (rooting Nematanthus)
Plants now classified within the genus Nematanthus were historically grouped under the genus Hypocyrta. Advances in botanical research led to their reclassification, placing them firmly within Nematanthus in the Gesneriad family.
Synonyms
Hypocyrta radicans
Common Name
Variegated Goldfish Plant
Origin
Native to the tropical forests of Brazil in South America.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or evening sun can encourage flowering, but avoid strong direct midday sunlight which may scorch the leaves.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Reduce watering slightly during winter when growth slows.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity. It thrives in kitchens, bathrooms, or when grouped with other houseplants where humidity levels are naturally higher.
Soil
Use a light, well-draining potting mix. A blend of houseplant compost with bark and perlite works well, allowing moisture retention while preventing waterlogging.
Food
Feed every 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Pause feeding during winter.
Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 12°C and keep away from cold drafts.
Pet-safe
Not known to be toxic, but it is still best to keep houseplants out of reach of curious pets.
Sprouts Top Tips
Pinch back trailing stems in spring to encourage bushier growth and more flowering.
Extras
The cascading stems make this plant ideal for hanging baskets or letting trail from a shelf.
