Hoya sp. UT-208 is an unusual collector’s Hoya grown for its attractive foliage and trailing or climbing growth habit. Still identified by its collection number rather than a formally described species name, it is a great choice for Hoya enthusiasts looking to add something a little more unusual to their collection.
Scientific Name
Hoya sp. UT-208
Common Name(s)
Wax Plant, Hoya UT-208
Origin
A collected Hoya accession from Southeast Asia. The “UT-208” collection number is used to identify this plant while its exact taxonomic identity remains unresolved.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Some gentle morning or evening sunlight can encourage healthy growth and flowering, but avoid prolonged strong midday sun, which may scorch the foliage.
Water
Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry between waterings before watering thoroughly. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as Hoyas are susceptible to root rot. Reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows.
Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity. It will appreciate humidity of around 50–70%, particularly when actively growing, but good airflow is also important.
Soil
Requires a loose, airy and well-draining growing medium. A houseplant mix amended generously with orchid bark and perlite works well.
Food
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temperature
Prefers warm temperatures between 18–27°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
Yes, Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Sprouts Top Tips
Allow this Hoya to climb a trellis or support to encourage established growth, or let its vines trail naturally. If it produces flowers, avoid removing the old flower spurs, known as peduncles, as Hoyas can bloom repeatedly from the same point.
Extras
As an accession plant rather than a formally named species, characteristics can vary between plants sold under collection numbers. Given the right conditions and maturity, UT-208 can produce the distinctive clusters of waxy flowers associated with the Hoya genus.
Did You Know?
The “sp.” in Hoya sp. UT-208 means that the plant belongs to the genus Hoya, but its species has not been formally determined. Collection numbers such as UT-208 allow growers and collectors to keep track of distinct plants while their botanical identity is being studied.
