Natal Ivy, also known for its striking variegated leaves and trailing growth habit, is a delightful addition to indoor spaces and hanging baskets. This succulent vine features thick, glossy leaves that can vary in colour, with creamy white or yellow margins contrasting beautifully against the rich green centres. It’s a resilient plant that thrives in various conditions, making it a great choice for both beginners and seasoned plant enthusiasts.

Scientific Name
Senecio macroglossus (large-tongued senecio)

Originally classified by botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker, this species is native to South Africa and is part of the diverse Senecio genus, which comprises a wide variety of plants, many of which are popular as houseplants.

Common Name(s)
Natal Ivy, Wax Plant

Origin
Native to South Africa, particularly in regions such as the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sunlight. In lower light conditions, the plant may become leggy and lose some of its vibrancy.

Water
Water thoroughly but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure proper drainage.

Humidity
This plant enjoys moderate humidity but is quite adaptable. It can thrive in average household humidity but will appreciate occasional misting.

Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix, that allows excess water to escape easily.

Food
Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Enjoys temperatures between 15-25°C (59-77°F). Protect from frost and avoid exposing it to temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

Pet-safe
Generally considered non-toxic to pets, making it a safe choice for homes with animals.

Sprouts Top Tips
Encourage bushy growth by pinching back leggy stems. This will promote branching and a fuller appearance. It’s also a good idea to provide some support if grown vertically.

Extras
Senecio macroglossus is a fantastic choice for beginners, and its trailing habit makes it perfect for hanging baskets or shelves.

Did You Know?
This plant is often appreciated for its ability to thrive in varied conditions, making it a versatile addition to any plant collection.
