This compact deciduous shrub is grown primarily for its spectacular foliage, which emerges in vivid shades of copper, pink, orange, and yellow before maturing to fresh green. In summer, airy plumes of creamy white flowers rise above the foliage, attracting a range of pollinating insects. Hardy and easy to grow, Sorbaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’ provides colour and structure from spring through autumn and is an excellent choice for borders, wildlife gardens, and larger containers.
Sorbaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’, commonly known as False Spirea, combines the fern-like elegance of a spirea with the toughness of a hardy shrub. Its changing foliage colours provide season-long interest, while its compact habit makes it far more suitable for smaller gardens than the species. Fully hardy in the UK, it can tolerate temperatures well below -20°C.
Deciduous Shrub
Compact, Bushy, Foliage Interest, Wildlife Friendly
Flowers: June to August
Foliage: March to November
Scientific Name
Sorbaria sorbifolia ‘Sem’ (rowan-leaved Sorbaria)
Synonyms
Previously classified as Spiraea sorbifolia.
Common Name
False Spirea
Ural False Spirea
Origin
The species Sorbaria sorbifolia is native to eastern Europe, Siberia, Russia, Mongolia, northern China, Korea, and Japan. ‘Sem’ is a compact cultivated selection developed for garden use.
Pruning Tips
Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing stems in late winter or early spring. Older stems can be thinned out every few years to maintain a tidy shape and encourage vigorous new growth. Remove any unwanted suckers as they appear.
Wildlife Value
The nectar-rich flowers attract bees, hoverflies, and other pollinating insects during summer. The dense foliage can also provide shelter for garden wildlife.
Positioning
Thrives in full sun or partial shade. The best foliage colour is usually achieved in a sunny position, although it will tolerate some shade. Suitable for borders, woodland-style planting schemes, wildlife gardens, and large containers.
Water
Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established, it is relatively tolerant of short dry spells, although it performs best with consistent moisture during prolonged periods of hot weather.
Soil
Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Best grown in neutral to slightly acidic conditions but adapts well to most garden soils.
Food
Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring. An annual mulch of garden compost or well-rotted organic matter will help maintain healthy growth and improve soil moisture retention.
Pet-safe
No specific toxicity to cats, dogs, or horses has been widely reported. However, as with all ornamental plants, consumption should be discouraged.
Sprouts Top Tips
Plant where the colourful spring foliage can be appreciated up close. The fiery new growth is often at its brightest in early spring and creates a striking contrast against darker green plants.
Did You Know?
The species name sorbifolia means “rowan-leaved”, referring to the resemblance between its finely divided leaves and those of the rowan tree (Sorbus aucuparia). The cultivar ‘Sem’ was selected for its compact size and particularly vibrant new foliage colours.
