Few garden plants offer such spectacular seasonal colour as Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’. Its finely divided leaves emerge in rich burgundy-purple in spring, retain their deep colouring throughout summer, and transform into brilliant shades of crimson and scarlet in autumn. Elegant and architectural, this Japanese Maple makes a stunning focal point in borders, courtyards, containers, and Japanese-inspired gardens.
Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’, commonly known as Japanese Maple, is one of the most popular and reliable purple-leaved maple varieties. Its graceful branching structure provides year-round interest, while its delicate foliage creates a beautiful contrast against green shrubs and perennials. Slow growing and easy to maintain, it is well suited to both small and large gardens.

Flowers: April to May
Foliage: March to November
Scientific Name
Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ (purple-leaved hand-shaped maple)
Common Name
Japanese Maple
Purple Japanese Maple
Origin
The species Acer palmatum is native to Japan, Korea, eastern China, Mongolia, and parts of Russia. ‘Atropurpureum’ is a long-established cultivated form selected for its rich purple foliage.
Pruning Tips
Requires very little pruning. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches during late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant. Avoid heavy pruning, as Japanese maples naturally develop an attractive shape.
Wildlife Value
The small spring flowers provide nectar for pollinating insects, while the branching structure can offer shelter and nesting opportunities for birds. Mature specimens contribute valuable habitat within wildlife-friendly gardens.
Positioning
Prefers a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. In hotter or more exposed locations, some afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch. Ideal for specimen planting, Japanese gardens, woodland-style borders, and large containers.
Water
Water regularly during the first few years after planting and during prolonged dry periods. Container-grown specimens may require more frequent watering, particularly during warm weather.
Soil
Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Performs best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions but adapts to most garden soils provided drainage is good.
Food
Apply a balanced fertiliser or mulch with garden compost in spring. Container-grown plants may benefit from an annual top dressing of fresh compost.
Pet-safe
Generally regarded as non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses.
Sprouts Top Tips
Choose a sheltered spot protected from strong winds. The delicate leaves can become damaged in exposed locations, while protection helps preserve the rich foliage colour throughout the growing season.
Did You Know?
The species name palmatum means “hand-shaped”, referring to the distinctive leaf shape that resembles an open hand. ‘Atropurpureum’ comes from Latin and means “dark purple”, perfectly describing the rich colour of its foliage throughout much of the year.
