Large daisy-like flowers in rich shades of rosy pink are held proudly above sturdy stems from midsummer into autumn, bringing long-lasting colour and pollinator appeal to the garden. Echinacea ‘Mooodz Sympathy’ combines the classic charm of a coneflower with a compact, well-branched habit, making it ideal for borders, containers, wildlife gardens, and cut flower displays.
Echinacea ‘Mooodz Sympathy’, commonly known as Coneflower, is part of a modern breeding series selected for prolific flowering, excellent branching, and strong garden performance. Its vibrant blooms provide weeks of interest and continue to attract pollinators long after many summer flowers have faded. The prominent central cone also adds architectural interest and can provide winter structure if left standing.
Perennial
Herbaceous, Compact, Long Flowering, Pollinator Friendly
Flowers: July to October
Foliage: April to October
Scientific Name
Echinacea ‘Mooodz Sympathy’ (hedgehog flower)
Common Name
Coneflower
Origin
The genus Echinacea is native to the prairies and open grasslands of central and eastern North America. ‘Mooodz Sympathy’ is a cultivated garden variety bred for compact growth, abundant flowering, and strong garden performance.
Pruning Tips
Deadhead spent flowers throughout the season to encourage continued blooming. In autumn, either cut stems back to ground level or leave seedheads standing through winter to provide structure and food for wildlife.
Wildlife Value
An excellent plant for pollinators. The flowers attract bees, bumblebees, butterflies, and hoverflies throughout summer. If seedheads are left intact, they may also provide food for seed-eating birds during autumn and winter.
Positioning
Thrives in full sun and is ideal for mixed borders, prairie-style planting, wildlife gardens, cottage gardens, and containers. Best planted where it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Water
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, coneflowers are relatively drought tolerant and generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells.
Soil
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil and grows well in loam, chalk, or sandy soils. Avoid sites that remain wet during winter.
Food
Apply a balanced fertiliser or mulch with garden compost in spring. Avoid overfeeding, which can encourage excessive leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
Pet-safe
Generally regarded as non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses.
Sprouts Top Tips
Leave some of the seedheads standing after flowering has finished. They provide winter interest, catch frost beautifully, and can attract birds to the garden during the colder months.
Did You Know?
The name Echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos, meaning “hedgehog” or “sea urchin”, referring to the spiky central cone that gives the flower its distinctive appearance. Many species of Echinacea have been used historically by Indigenous peoples of North America for a variety of traditional medicinal purposes.
