A dazzling foliage begonia known for its glowing lime green veins and richly textured leaves, Begonia ‘Firefly’ brings an almost electric splash of colour to indoor plant collections. The dramatic contrast between the dark foliage and bright chartreuse patterning gives the plant a luminous appearance, especially in softer lighting or high humidity environments. Compact and highly decorative, it is a favourite amongst collectors looking for unusual tropical foliage.
This begonia thrives in warm, humid conditions and is particularly well suited to terrariums, indoor plant cabinets, or bright bathrooms where humidity remains consistent. With the right care, it develops increasingly bold foliage and a lush, layered growth habit.
Scientific Name
Begonia ‘Firefly’ (cultivar begonia)
Common Name
Firefly Begonia
Origin
A cultivated foliage begonia selected for its vivid veining and dramatic leaf contrast, believed to have ancestry linked to tropical Asian species begonias.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves and dull the vibrant colouring. Lower light may reduce the intensity of the lime green veins.
Water
Keep the soil lightly moist but not wet. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the compost dry out completely for long periods.
Humidity
Thrives in higher humidity levels above 60%. Ideal for terrariums, cabinets, bathrooms, or near a humidifier. Protect from dry air and cold draughts.
Soil
Use a loose, airy, well draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A blend of coco coir, fine bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite works very well.
Food
Feed every 2 to 4 waters during spring and summer using a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Temp
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Pet-safe
Toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Stable humidity and consistent warmth help maintain the glowing foliage colours. Crisp edges or curling leaves are usually a sign the air is too dry.
Extras
The vivid lime veining can appear almost fluorescent under certain lighting conditions, making this begonia especially eye catching in evening lighting or enclosed display cabinets.
Did You Know?
Many tropical begonias evolved dramatic leaf markings to maximise light absorption beneath dense rainforest canopies, where sunlight is heavily filtered through layers of foliage.
